How Light & Rugged?
Very rugged looking and acceptionally light weight guitars. We don't do guitar with the exact look, feel, and factory-perfect finish of mass-produced, major brand-name guitars. We focus on unique, hand-crafted builds rather than replicating commercial factory finishes.
The Artist
Jumali Katani / Adam Lawless
Born in Singapore in 1967, he worked briefly as a cleaner after high school. With his sister's support, he later attended the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, graduating with a diploma in Applied Arts with distinction.
He consistently builds his own career paths; after five years of agency experience, he established himself as an independent illustrator in 1997.
He founded his home guitar workshop in September 2025 under the name Rugged Monster. Built to defy industry norms, the brand carves its own niche with a style that is both rugged and full of charm.
While he does not identify as a traditional guitar maker—partly due to his mechanophobia, a fear of machines—he sources components online to build unique instruments infused with his personal artistic vision. For him, the philosophy is simple: if an instrument looks stunning, sounds great, and plays smoothly, everything else falls into place.
Now residing in Johor after gaining Malaysian citizenship in 2023, his enduring passion for building guitars continues to thrive.
